Ibn Sīnā on Reductio Ad Absurdum

چکیده
This paper studies the analysis of reductio ad absurdum by Ibn Sı̄nā (known to the Latin West as Avicenna), who was born in 980 in a village near the Bactrian town of Balkh on the Silk Road, and died in 1037 after a career spent moving around within the present boundaries of Iran. References to Ibn Sı̄nā’s writings are to his Arabic texts listed in the bibliography, and are given in the format page.line. References to the text translated from Qiyās [14] at the end of this paper are marked with an asterisk ?.

Reductio Ad Absurdum and Slippery Slope Arguments: Two Sides of the Same Coin?
Despite the fact that the reductio ad absurdum argument is a valid deductive form, while the slippery slope argument is most often presented as a fallacious form of inductive argument, the two argument types bear some striking similarities. Investigation of these similarities reveals some more universal difficulties in the teaching of informal logic, and, in particular the difference between st...
متن کاملOn the Proof by Reductio ad Absurdum of the Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem for Ensembles of Fractionally Occupied States of Coulomb Systems
It is demonstrated that the original reductio ad absurdum proof of the generalization of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for ensembles of fractionally occupied states for isolated many-electron Coulomb systems with Coulomb-type external potentials by Gross et al. [Phys. Rev. A 37, 2809 (1988)] is selfcontradictory since the to-be-refuted assumption (negation) regarding the ensemble one-electron dens...
متن کاملReductio ad Absurdum: Planning Proofs by Contradiction
Sometimes it is pragmatically useful to prove a theorem by contradiction rather than finding a direct proof. Some reductio ad absurdum arguments have made mathematical history and the general issue if and how a proof by contradiction can be replaced by a direct proof touches upon deep foundational issues such as the legitimacy of tertium non datur arguments in classical vs. intuitionistic found...
متن کاملDoes reductio ad absurdum have a place in evidence-based medicine?
In a meta-analysis published in BMC Medicine, we explored whether evidence-based medicine can actually be sure that 'sucrose = sucrose' in the treatment of depression. This paper, based upon a reductio ad absurdum, addressed an epistemological question using a 'scientific' approach, and could be disconcerting as suggested by Cipriani and Geddes' commentary. However, most papers are based upon a...
متن کاملCognitive components of troubleshooting strategies
This study investigated the kinds of knowledge necessary to learn an important troubleshooting strategy, elimination. A total of 50 college-level students searched for the source of failures in simple digital networks. Production system modelling suggested that students using a common but simpler backtracking strategy would learn the more advanced elimination strategy if they applied certain do...
